Tonality is the most comprehensive of all music environments. There are 9 different musical instruments, 5 music styles and 2 songs to choose from. Each combination can be played in different ways - with gestures and movements of individual body parts, through larger movement in space (including driving in a wheelchair) to small movements with the eyes or mouth, standing, sitting or lying down.
In the development of Tonality, it was important to us that beautiful and pleasant sounds are already created when trying it out for the first time, inviting further practice and experimentation with the musical environment. At the same time, the player's movements take on a conscious role in controlling the music and enable the player to reach an expert level with a little practice.
Most of the music environment is based on algorithmic composition. This means that the notes are not identically reproducible. However, Tonality also includes a section called Songs, where the chords and notes are pre-programmed so that even a small collection of melodies can be played with the body.
Content: 9 instruments (piano, celesta, bass, harp, guitar, synthesizer, cello, flute, choir), 5 music styles (classical, blues, Japanese, flamenco, chroma), 2 songs (Amélie, Pachelbel).
Play options: 1 player mode horizontal and vertical, 1 and 2 zones for multiple player:inside
Controls: whole body, gestures, impulses, songs in 1-player mode with chord selection
Who for: children and adults, also with physical or cognitive disabilities; for fun music classes, sports and dance lessons, cognitive stimulation and group experience
Fields allows you to express yourself with animal voices and familiar sounds from nature and immerse yourself in a fun, calming or poetic world.
The music environment is based on the simple idea that more movement creates more sound. Stillness brings silence, and with our biggest movements come the biggest and loudest sounds possible. The challenge in playing is how this correlation affects each species or the richness of nature's sounds. Different sounds and noises are hidden in each sound world: a wink makes a drop of water fall, an upward movement makes a thunderstorm sound, the cat starts purring when you stroke it and seals, dolphins and whales come to visit on the beach.
Content: over 20 animal and nature sounds, such as cat, dog, motorbike, beach and water.
Play options: 1 player mode horizontal and vertical, 1 and 2 zones for multiple players:inside
Controls: whole body, gestures, impulses
Who for: ideal for children; for storytelling and role-playing; for this purpose, the MotionComposer hands-on book contains a collection of suitable read-aloud stories whose protagonists can be brought to life with Fields.
The basis for drums is the drum kit. This music environment is supported by a digital technology called quantisation. This means that software helps you stay in time and in the groove. If your gestures are a little too early, the software delays the drum sound slightly to get you back in time. If you start too late, the software can play the sound back to the next bar.
In the beginning, when you are still getting familiar with the music environment, the software can help you play faster. The more you play with it, the better your feeling for rhythm and playing will become.
What's also special about drums is the constantly evolving gameplay: at one point, individual movements trigger precise percussive events, then the entire body is immersed in a complex groove where differentiation takes place - a constant alternation between playing and being played rhythmically.
Musical content: 4 drum or percussion variations - Rock, Conga, Hip-Hop, Funny
Playing options: 1 player mode vertical, 1 and 2 zones for several players:inside
Control: in player mode with discrete percussive movements of the hands or feet; in zone mode by moving any part of the body
Who for: For children and adults who want to use their play energy rhythmically and train their sense of rhythm.
Imagine pebbles and grains of sand on the beach. Seen from a distance, we see them as a mass with one shape and texture. But when you pick them up with your hand, each grain of sand has its own individual shape, size and colour. If you go to another part of the beach, the stones and grains there look completely different.
Particles is a bit like these stones and grains of sand, only as sound and tone. The small sounds are sonically rich and varied, but still with recognisable qualities. They are connected to the place and the environment. And just like sand and gravel, there are hundreds of such uniquenesses! If you make big movements, you will feel an energy that seems to move sound masses the size of clouds. With small movements you will begin to distinguish the individual qualities of the sounds. And if you stay very still and move only one eyelid or finger, you may manage to hear each sound as a particular 'pebble'. That is then a very happy discovery!
Particles, composed by Norwegian electroacoustic composer Andreas Bergsland and others, uses a sound processing technique known as granular synthesis, which is considered one of the most powerful methods. Not everyone likes this kind of sound generation, but for many, Particles is the most advanced and coolest of all our sound environments.
The Particles environment is very intuitive. You don't need to understand how it works to play it. Because it is based on discrete sounds triggered by discrete movements and gestures, it is a highly causal experience. Just go to any place in the room and see what there is to discover.
Content: 3 different sound sets: Materials such as wood, water and metal, a whole orchestra spread around the room, and a classical Chinese poem - but it's unlike any other in the world!
Play options: 1 player horizontal and vertical, 1 zone
Controls: whole body, gestures with arms and feet, impulses
Who for: Children and adults who like to move slowly, also with cognitive disabilities.
How could we develop MotionComposer without techno? For many people, techno is the definition of dance music! Therefore, when we developed Techno, we focused on combining the dynamics of movement with the dynamics of music: The more you dance, the more music you get!
In addition to the full-body sound experience, you can also use concrete gestures to explore the musical variations, including DJ filters. If you activate 'flow' in the movement menu, you'll need to wiggle your bum to pump up the groove. If not, it's your job to set the accents that give the tracks their hooks.
Since techno is a popular genre, we've included Dresden techno producer Jacob Korn and two of his well-known tracks. Other grooves come from Berlin composer Marcello Lussano.
Content: 4 techno sets, among others by Jacob Korn and Marcello Lussano.
Play options: 1 and 2 player mode (one player takes the role of the DJ), 1 and 2 zones (e.g. 2 groups take turns playing parts of the song)
Controls: whole body, gestures with arms and feet, impulses
Who for: young and adult techno sound lovers
We all know pieces of music that really mean something to us. Music that matters to us, that makes us smile and move. The music environment Your Music was inspired by Oliver Sacks, who reports in his book Musicophilia about patients he could only reach when he played certain pieces of music.
In this way, Your Music differs from the other music environments. Here you decide what music you play. You can import any piece of music you want in the form of an MP3 file.
There are two basic ways to play Your Music:
The stop-and-go principle: If you slow down and eventually stop, the music will also slow down and eventually stop. Or the music seems to be far away, and comes closer as you dance. In zone mode, you play stop-and-go with the whole group in the room. When the group stops and even one person moves, you will hear it!
The second way to play Your Music is with gestures. With fun effects like scratching, you can add your own personal touch to your favourite song like a DJ - with your body!
Content: load up to 100 songs of your choice onto your MotionComposer.
Play options: 1 player, 2 players and groups
Controls: whole body, gestures with arms, impulses
Who for: children and adults, including those with physical or cognitive disabilities; for fun music classes, sports & dance lessons, cognitive stimulation and group experiences
